Las Calaveras Caves
Alicante
Fun family day out as you look for familiar images in the rock formation. It's also lovely and cool in there in the summer.
These magnificent caves are in the north Alicante region. There are some marvellous examples of rock formations within the caves.
Said to be the largest caves in the world, they certainly are among the oldest and are said to be more than 50,000 years old. Inside you will find some amazing and fascinating examples of stalactites and stalagmites.
While looking at the rock formations, you may think some of them seem a little familiar. Imaginative visitors have likened the formations to a map of Spain, a pirate, a boar, a crocodile, a polar bear, the bust of Sophia Loren, Don Quixote, an elephant's head, a horse and the late President Kennedy.
This is a fabulous day out in inland Alicante. A good time to go is in the summer as the caves are so lovely and cool.
While in the Benidoleig area, you will find many rustic bars and restaurants to enjoy a meal.
