For centuries astrologers have consulted the stars to predict what may lie ahead for people. Today, many people will still read their horoscopes and be guided by their sign of the Zodiac to understand their love life, work or money issues.

Now scientists have discovered that your health may be governed by the month you were born in. University of Alicante researchers have shown chronic diseases and long-term health are linked to your birth month.

As the seasons change, so does the intensity of ultraviolet rays, causing different movement of viruses and bacteria that can affect the development of a foetus during pregnancy and at birth, according to the study.

The researchers looked at 30,000 people in relation to 27 chronic diseases to see if the season in which they were born affected their long-term health. And it seems as though it does.

Women born in July are 40% more likely to become incontinent while men born in September are almost three times more likely to suffer thyroid problems than those born in January. Those born in August are twice as likely to develop asthma than those born earlier in the year and people born in June are more likely to have depression.

Research suggests those born in the warmer seasons receive a higher dose of healthy sunlight, so the body produces more vitamin D (which helps absorb minerals like calcium and phosphorus). Receiving such nutrients at an early age favours long-term health.

However what is interesting is that the sex of the baby also influences the way the seasons affect them with men and women suffering different illnesses even when they are born in the same month.

So could your health really be written in the stars? What month were you born in and does the study ring true for you?
