The competition attracts around 800 choristers from all over the world who are keeping the tradition of the habanera alive. So what is a habanera? The habanera originated in Cuba in the 19th century with songs of a precise rhythm. Torrevieja sailors founds out about it during their voyages by sea. When Torrevieja sailors headed for Cuba 150 years ago, they picked up this musical genre and bought it back home with them. The competition grew from this historic event in the 1950s.
